Admissions 2025
The Ph.D program at TIFR Hyderabad aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach toward answering scientific question. The department-less structure, an open-lab culture, a flexible course selection and the freedom to join any lab in the institute, combined with world-class facilities and cutting-edge research, creates a stimulating research environment and enables students to pursue interdisciplinary research. Students are admitted through either of the following three subject boards: Physics-oriented, Chemistry-oriented, or Biology-oriented. The choice of the subject board depends on the student’s previous degree and his/her research interests.
Eligibility criteria
The eligibility criteria for the Ph.D and integrated M.Sc–Ph.D programmes under the Physics-oriented, Chemistry-oriented, and Biology-oriented subject boards are listed below.

Sciences
OR
4-year degree holders (e.g. BE/BTech/BPharm or equivalent) may be permitted to join as PhD students if they fulfill the criterionof a minimum aggregate score of 75%/GPA 7.5 in their Bachelors’ degree.
Integrated M.Sc–Ph.D: 3-year BSc/BS or equivalent degree
OR
4-year degree holders (e.g. BE/BTech/BPharm or equivalent) may join as I-PhD students if they wish to obtain an MSc in addition to the PhD.
In addition, the candidate must have qualified in any of the following examinations in the Chemical Sciences/Engineering:

Ph.D: M.Sc (Physics/Chemistry/Any branch of Biology) or any professional Master’s degree (M.Pharma./M.Tech.), or a degree that requires four or more years of university training (e.g., MBBS, BDS).
I-PhD: Bachelors degree in any branch of Biology/Physics/ Chemistry/Computer Science/ OR any 4-year degree program that awards a “Bachelor’s degree” including BTech, BE, BVSc, BPharm (4 year course). Candidates with a Master's degree in non-Biology disciplines may join as I-PhD students if they wish to obtain an MSc in addition to the PhD

Through TIFR Entrance Exam (GS 2025): Based on the academic performance and the results of GS TIFR entrance exam, shortlisted candidates will be invited for the interview. TIFRH Physics interviews will be conducted during tentatively in Apr 2025 for candidates shortlisted through TIFR Entrance exam. Study at TIFR Hyderabad
The academics at TIFRH is a holistic experience where students go beyond the textbook and their lab, to work together with students of other disciplines, and attend seminars, conferences, and symposiums. The full calendar of events at TIFRH also includes cultural activities and community outreach programmes. While TIFRH’s fluid structure of learning encourages students to be creative and innovative, the intensive academic requirements also ensure that they acquire the highest levels of theoretical knowledge and practical skill. Further, they have the scope to gain practical and field experiences through collaborations with other institutions, research organisations, and industry players across Hyderabad. They can also take advantage of the ecosystem of translational research and entrepreneurship in the city.
Courses offered
The structure at TIFRH is such that students may take up courses from other subject boards other than the board they are enrolled under, and proceed to fulfill the credit requirements. Students can choose from an extensive array of subjects provided in our course list which is available here. The allocation of credits for these courses will be done as per the subject board guidelines under which the student is admitted. The course work for registration must be done by students as per the requirements of their respective subject boards. Ph.D
- Duration: 5 years
- Coursework must be completed within a maximum period of 2 years or as per the respective subject board guidelines.
- The student must register for their Ph.D research at the end of 2 years.
- A residency period of 2 years after joining TIFRH is mandatory for submitting the thesis.
- Timely disbursement of monthly scholarship: ₹37,000/- (enhanced to ₹42,000/- after registration for Ph.D research)
- Annual contingency grant: ₹40,000/-
- Duration: 6 years
- Coursework must be completed within a maximum period of 3 years as per the respective subject board guidelines.
- The student must register for a Ph.D at the end of 3 years.
- Requirements for their M.Sc degree must be completed by the end of 3 years as per the respective subject board guidelines. This will be awarded along with the Ph.D degree at the end of their programme term.
- A residency period of 1 year for M.Sc and 2 years for Ph.D after joining TIFRH is mandatory for submitting the thesis.
- Timely disbursement of monthly scholarship: ₹21,000/-; ₹37,000/- from second year (enhanced to ₹42,000/- after registration for Ph.D)
- Annual contingency grant: ₹25,000/- (enhanced to ₹40,000/- from second year onwards)
