The Ph.D program at TIFR Hyderabad aims to foster an interdisciplinary approach toward answering scientific question. The department-less structure, an open-lab culture, a flexible course selection and the freedom to join any lab in the institute, combined with world-class facilities and cutting-edge research, creates a stimulating research environment and enables students to pursue interdisciplinary research. Students are admitted through either of the following three subject boards: Physics-oriented, Chemistry-oriented, or Biology-oriented. The choice of the subject board depends on the student’s previous degree and his/her research interests.

Eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria for the Ph.D and integrated M.Sc–Ph.D programmes under the Physics-oriented, Chemistry-oriented, and Biology-oriented subject boards are listed below.

Ph.D: M.Sc (Physics) or a B.Tech/B.E/ degree in Engineering Physics, which requires four or more years of university training.

Integrated M.Sc–Ph.D: B.Sc/ B.E./ B.Tech/ B.Pharma or equivalent Science/Engineering/Medical degree/M.Sc (other than Physics)/M.Tech/M. Pharm/MBBS or equivalent Science/Engineering/Medical Master’s degree.

In addition, the candidate must have qualified in any of the following examinations in Physical Sciences/ Engineering:
  • The written test of TIFR (2023)
  • GATE (minimum valid score of 595 in 2021, 2022 or 2023)
  • JEST 2023 (minimum rank of 100)
  • CSIR UGC NET 2021 or 2022 (JRF eligible)

Candidates with M.Tech/M.E/M.S (Engg.) can submit their earlier scores of GATE/equivalent.
Ph.D: M.Sc (Chemistry) / M.Tech (Chemical Sciences)/M.Pharma or equivalent science/engineering/Medical degree

Integrated M.Sc–Ph.D: B.Sc/ B.E./ B. Tech/ B.Pharma or equivalent Science/Engineering/Medical degree

In addition, the candidate must have qualified in any of the following examinations in the Chemical Sciences/Engineering:
  • The written test of TIFR (2023)
  • GATE (minimum valid score of 450 in 2021, 2022 or 2023)
  • JAM 2023 (Only for integrated M.Sc–Ph.D, minimum rank of 400)
  • CSIR UGC NET 2021 or 2022 (JRF eligible)
Ph.D: M.Sc (Physics/Chemistry/Any branch of Biology) or any professional Master’s degree (M.Pharma./M.Tech.), or a degree that requires four or more years of university training (e.g., MBBS, BDS).

Integrated M.Sc–Ph.D: B.Sc (Physics/Chemistry/Any branch of Biology) or any 4-year degree program that awards a Bachelor’s degree including B.Tech, B.E, B.V.Sc., B.Pharma (4-year course).

In addition, the candidate must have qualified in any of the following examinations in the Biological Sciences/Engineering:
  • JGEEBILS 2023
  • GATE (Top 5 Percentile of ranks in 2021, 2022, or 2023)
  • CSIR UGC NET (JRF eligible) (Top 5 Percentile of ranks in 2021 or 2022)
Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on the results of written test marks/score/rank of the above mentioned examinations and a scientific write-up. The application form and the initial steps of admission are common for TIFR-H and other TIFR centres, but the shortlisting for the interview and the interview process is independent for each of the centres.

TIFRH will consider any and all applications received before Mar 31, 2023. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for on-campus interview. TIFRH Biology interviews will be conducted 22-25 May 2023 (1st Round, Online) and 12-15 Jun 2023 (2nd Round) (for both Ph.D and Int M.Sc-Ph.D candidates). The exact dates for the on-campus interview will be mentioned in the call letter.

Applicants who are qualified through GATE/CSIR UGC-NET and are in the top 05 percentile of ranks are required to write to phd@ncbs.res.in. We will provide instructions to you on how to submit a full application. In the full application you will be required to state your GATE/CSIR/UGC-NET rank and upload the corresponding Scorecard as supporting evidence.

Study at TIFR Hyderabad

The academics at TIFRH is a holistic experience where students go beyond the textbook and their lab, to work together with students of other disciplines, and attend seminars, conferences, and symposiums. The full calendar of events at TIFRH also includes cultural activities and community outreach programmes.

While TIFRH’s fluid structure of learning encourages students to be creative and innovative, the intensive academic requirements also ensure that they acquire the highest levels of theoretical knowledge and practical skill. Further, they have the scope to gain practical and field experiences through collaborations with other institutions, research organisations, and industry players across Hyderabad. They can also take advantage of the ecosystem of translational research and entrepreneurship in the city.

Courses offered

The structure at TIFRH is such that students may take up courses from other subject boards other than the board they are enrolled under, and proceed to fulfill the credit requirements. Students can choose from an extensive array of subjects provided in our course list which is available here. The allocation of credits for these courses will be done as per the subject board guidelines under which the student is admitted. The course work for registration must be done by students as per the requirements of their respective subject boards.

Ph.D

  • Duration: 5 years
  • Coursework must be completed within a maximum period of 2 years or as per the respective subject board guidelines.
  • The student must register for their Ph.D research at the end of 2 years.
  • A residency period of 2 years after joining TIFRH is mandatory for submitting the thesis.
  • Timely disbursement of monthly scholarship: ₹31,000/- (enhanced to ₹35,000/- after registration for Ph.D research)
  • Annual contingency grant: ₹40,000/-


Integrated M.Sc-Ph.D
  • Duration: 6 years
  • Coursework must be completed within a maximum period of 3 years as per the respective subject board guidelines.
  • The student must register for a Ph.D at the end of 3 years.
  • Requirements for their M.Sc degree must be completed by the end of 3 years as per the respective subject board guidelines. This will be awarded along with the Ph.D degree at the end of their programme term.
  • A residency period of 1 year for M.Sc and 2 years for Ph.D after joining TIFRH is mandatory for submitting the thesis.
  • Timely disbursement of monthly scholarship: ₹21,000/-; ₹31,000/- from second year (enhanced to ₹35,000/- after registration for Ph.D)
  • Annual contingency grant: ₹25,000/- (enhanced to ₹40,000/- from second year onwards)


Accommodation is provided to Ph.D and Integrated M.Sc-Ph.D students at a nominal cost.
